Innovations
Large surtax investments are being made in fiber installations along major arterials to support advanced traffic signal control systems and a wide spectrum of intelligent transportation system devices.
MAP Broward is also partnering with internal and external agencies to establish innovative solutions in transportation throughout the County.

Near miss Traffic Incident Pilot Study
Since February 2023, an innovative safety-promoting pilot project has been collaboratively managed by Broward County Traffic Engineering Division (TED) and the University of Florida (UF). This initiative has utilized emerging AI-detection technology to identify near misses at signalized intersections that shift the paradigm from reactively to proactively addressing roadway fatalities and serious injuries. Special camera and software analyze traffic events, i.e., near misses, where collisions almost happen.

TTS Connected Vehicle Data
Traffic Technology Services, Inc. (TTS) utilizes real-time data to develop automotive-grade messages that contain predictions of signalized intersection operations. These messages are delivered as an information service to customers implementing connected vehicle solutions, utilizing existing cellular communications to vehicles or mobile devices. TTS customers use the service to implement their own connected vehicle applications. Broward County will receive performance metric reports in return from TTS, summarizing signal performance and connected vehicle crossings. These performance metrics will help traffic engineers identify and quantify problem locations to improve traffic signal timing operations for all users. This reporting and service is provided at no-cost to the County.
non-motorized sensor counters
The Broward County Non-Motorized Count Project will use sensors to count the number of people walking and bicycling in Broward County in various locations. The implementation of this project follows Federal and State processes for a statistically valid, non-motorized count program. With the evolution of this project, Broward County will be among the leaders in Florida for collecting non-motorized count data.
Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality Project Experiences
The Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) Project experiences allow the public to immersively engage within the Broward County transportation system. The AR experience utilizes an iPad which you can explore an AR overview map of Broward County services that includes award-winning parks, libraries, airport, port, and other places of interests. The VR experience utilizes the Meta Quest headsets where you can now ride a County bus along several routes in a VR environment. There is a narrator that guides you along the route by providing useful information and there are also interactive games for users to participate in. Both AR & VR project experiences are fun and educational that are now available upon request to be experienced at the Government Center West building in the surtax plaza.
